  • What is a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)?

    An MVR is a record of a person’s driving history which includes details related to the driver’s traffic citations, vehicular accidents, driving while intoxicated (DWI)/driving while under the influence (DUI) convictions and the number of points on the driver’s license.

  • What is a University of Miami Affiliated Vehicle?

    This term describes vehicles that are insured and under the care and control of the University of Miami. This includes vehicles that are owned, courtesy loan, leased or rented by the University.

  • Who is required to obtain an MVR?

    • Any University of Miami employee who will be required to operate a university affiliated vehicle as part of their employment responsibilities and holds a satisfactory driving record with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will be eligible to apply for driving privileges.
    • Any student who is currently enrolled at the University of Miami and holds a satisfactory driving record and will be required to operate a university affiliated vehicle to fulfill an academic requirement will be eligible to apply for driving privileges.
    • Any university affiliated guest who will be operating a university affiliated vehicle for business purposes will be eligible to apply for driving privileges.

  • How long is the MVR Valid?

    • Employee driver will be approved for the period in which they will be required to drive as part of their scope of work, as directed by a supervisor, or upon termination.
    • Students and non-employee drivers are approved for the date range that was requested and approved at the time of screening.

  • What should I do if I am an approved driver and no longer required to drive in my current job duties?

    The employee’s supervisor must notify the Department of Risk Management to advise change.

  • What should I do if I transfer to another department?

    The employee’s supervisor must notify the Department of Risk Management to advise of the transfer.

  • What happens if my driver’s license is suspended?

    The employee must notify supervisor and immediately cease all operation of University of Miami affiliated vehicle.

  • In what states is Risk Management NOT authorized to request driving records for?

    Risk Management is not authorized to request the driving records for the following states:

    • Alaska
    • California
    • Pennsylvania
    • Washington
    • West Virginia

    Individuals holding a driver’s license from these respective states must request a three-year driver history from the state’s Division of Motor Vehicle and submit to Riskmanagement@miami.edu along with the completed MVR form.
