When Should I Contact Risk Management for Travel?

All University business travel should begin through the UM Travel Portal at https://travel.miami.edu.

Please contact Risk Management (RM) before booking if travel involves higher‑risk destinations, students, non‑traditional lodging, or other elevated risk considerations, so required approvals and risk mitigation can be addressed in advance.

Contact Risk Management if Travel Includes:

  • High‑risk or restricted destinations, including locations rated U.S. Department of State Level 3 or Level 4
  • Student travel, domestic or international, especially for group trips, complex itineraries, or when driver approval (MVR) is required
  • Non‑traditional lodging (e.g., Airbnb, VRBO)
    • Students may not use short‑term rentals without prior RM approval
  • Group travel, fieldwork, off‑site programs, or activities involving minors
  • Special insurance or compliance needs, such as rentals, charters, research activities, or other non‑routine risks

If you are unsure whether RM review is needed, contact Risk Management before booking.
